Why do grief counselling?
All of us will experience grief at some point. And no matter what kind of loss we may encounter, it can be an incredibly hard thing to go through (see this blog post on different things we can lose and grieve).
Robertson & Ling offer grief counselling to those who have experienced a loss, or to those anticipating a loss. So: when would it be appropriate to engage in grief counselling? Here are three occasions:
You’re struggling to cope with your grief
Grief can feel overwhelming and unbearable. Furthermore, our responsibilities don’t cease when we experience grief. As a result, those grieving can feel like it’s a monumental task simply to get through each day. Grief counselling can provide people with gentle and simple strategies so they are better able to cope with their grief. You’re unsure about your grief, and whether it’s “right”
Unfortunately, western society is not great at talking about grief and loss. This means that people may perceive that they are not doing grief “right.” They may feel like they are being sad for too long, or they’re crying too much, or they should be feeling more “normal.” Grief counselling can validate and normalise an individuals grief experience, which in turn reduces feelings of distress or pressure (for further information, see this blog post on different ways we can grieve). You’re struggling to adjust to life following a loss
Sometimes life can change drastically following a loss. It may require new routines, a new perspective, or new relationship dynamics. These changes can be difficult to adjust to, particularly amidst a grief process. Counselling can assist people to make the changes needed in their lives following a loss.If you would like to learn more about grief counselling at Robertson & Ling, or any other counselling we offer, such as marriage or couples counselling, please visit our Services page.
