Case Study: Adult Family Therapy

Clients:

Chloe (57, parent)
Julian (60, parent)
Seb (28, adult child)

Issue:

Seb finds it challenging to bring up issues or problems with his parents. He feels that they get defensive, or sweep his issues under the carpet. Both Chloe and Julian get frustrated when Seb keeps bringing up old issues. They want him to move on.

How R&L Helped:

To begin with, the Robertson & Ling counsellor conducted intake and assessment sessions - one with Seb, and one with Chloe and Julian. This enabled them to gain a thorough understanding of each person's perspective of the family dynamics.

The R&L counsellor used a number of interventions with the family to increase their level of understanding of one another. They also assisted them with their communication skills, particularly around conflictual issues. Finally, the R&L counsellor helped the family to discuss old wounds and grievances, so that each person felt that they had been appropriately resolved.

At the end of counselling, the family felt like they were able to discuss issues in a far healthier manner. Seb felt understood, and that his issues were heard within the family, whilst Chloe and Julian were thankful to have old problems addressed. Seb, Chloe and Julian were glad they had attended adult family therapy at R&L.
