The three issues that bring parents to counselling

Children using their phones - an issue that brings parenting to counselling

In an earlier blog post, we noted that when it comes to relationship counselling, couples tend to come to Robertson & Ling largely for two reasons: poor communication or lack of connection.

We also see a similar thing when it comes to parenting. There are a few specific issues that can cause parental concern or distress, and this leads them to seek counselling support.

So what are these issues? The top three that we see at Robertson & Ling are:

  1. School Can’t/Avoidance
It can be incredibly challenging when children or young people have stopped attending school. It places huge stress on the family unit, and the longer it goes on, the greater the toll it can take on parents - and the harder the child may find it to return to school. Unsurprisingly, parents turn to counselling for strategies and support as they seek to turn the tide.

  2. Technology Use
Technology use - and particularly social media use - can be a minefield for parents to navigate. Understandably, parents can be uncertain about the best way forward. What boundaries should I implement around technology use? How should these boundaries be implemented? What things should I be wary of? In what instances is technology use okay? Counselling can help parents wade through these choppy waters.

  3. “Big” Emotions
Whilst tantrums and the “big” emotions that come along with them are normal for children, it can still be a hard and overwhelming thing for parents to experience. In fact, sometimes parents can feel like they just make the situation worse! So parents come to counselling to grow in their capacity to tackle those difficult moments, and to help their child improve their ability to regulate their emotions.
